Coolant Quality Guide: Solving Hard Water & Tramp Oil Issues in Factories

Coolant Quality Guide: Solving Hard Water & Tramp Oil Issues in Factories

12 Jan 2026

Water-miscible Cutting Fluids are comprised of up to 95% water. Therefore, water quality has a direct impact on the efficiency and lifespan of the fluid, as well as the cutting tools themselves.

Major Issues from Improper Water Quality

  • Hard Water: High mineral content (calcium, magnesium) causes unstable emulsions and can leave residue deposits. Furthermore, these minerals promote bacterial growth.

  • High Contaminants: Excessive chloride levels can accelerate corrosion on both machinery and workpieces.

Key Control and Maintenance Regular monitoring and maintenance of coolant is essential to extend its lifespan:

  1. Concentration Measurement: Should be measured with a Refractometer at least 1-2 times per week.

    • Low Concentration: Leads to corrosion, poor lubrication, and bacterial growth.

    • High Concentration: May cause sticky residues and increased foaming.

  2. pH Measurement: Should be checked weekly. Generally, the value should be 9.0 - 9.6. A drop in pH indicates bacterial issues or low concentration.

  3. Tramp Oil Management: Contaminant oil floats on top, reducing oxygen in the system, which promotes foul-smelling bacteria. You should use a Skimmer or Oil Separator to remove it regularly.

Efficiency Enhancement Tips

  • Use Pure Water: It is recommended to use DI Water (Deionized) or RO Water for mixing and top-ups to prevent mineral buildup.

  • Correct Mixing Method: Always add the coolant concentrate slowly into the water (O.I.W. - Oil Into Water). Never pour water into the concentrate.
